KingRex T20U, this new model follows in the footsteps of the ssuccesful T20. With its more powerful output and classy looks, the T20 has sent shockwaves through the Hi-Fi industry. The T20U brings something new to the T20, a high quality USB input DAC.

The T20U features the Tripath TA2020 chip which is able to produce more power than most ‘T-Amps’ already on the market. It’s suitable for loudspeakers with 86~90db sensitivity and can effortlessly give more than enough sound for the average room. The built in USB DAC utilises the Bur rBrown OPA2604 as the output stage, in addition a low-noise TL072 JFET from Texas Instruments is used as a DC server. The OPA2604 is socketed, therefore allowing easy Op-Amp upgrades.

Music is detailed, crisp and definitely not bass shy. Soundstage is wide with a lot of space around instruments and vocals. Don’t let its small size deceive you! The KingRex T20U is one serious amplifier.

All this is enclosed in a tiny but elegant enclosure of anodized aluminum, the plugs at the back are all gold plated. Build quality is strict and very simple with minimal features and straight to the point circuitry.

The optional high performance KingRex PSU power supply is also available. With this addition to the already amazing T20U, it gains a more ‘valve’ like sound and a greater soundstage.

Comes supplied with a switch-mode power supply.

KingRex  Pre-Amp

It has been a long time coming, but finally a Pre-Amplifier designed for “T-Amps” is available. KingRex have answered our prayers and released the Pre-Amp! Designed ground up specifically for “T-Amps”, this pre-amplifier is brilliantly executed, with a highly effective and technically sophisticated design. The KingRex Pre-Amp delivers versatility, value and performance.

Two Input Sources

High-quality gold-plated RCA jacks provide two source inputs. The source is selected automatically depending on which is generating the signal. Switching is carried out via a CMOS digital integrated circuit, the Toshiba TC4001B. When using two sources, the one not being used is muted or turned off.

Quality Parts

Key components include three pairs of Burr-Brown ICs: OPA627 for pre-amplification, BUF634 for increasing and sustaining higher output current, OPA177 for DC servo.

  • The Pre-Amp uses a low-noise FET input Op-Amp. The highly-regarded and expensive OPA627 is used as the main Op-Amp. A new-generation FET (Difet) Op-Amp, it is known for its low noise and high speed.
  • The BUF634 is a high-speed Op-Amp used to increase and sustain higher current output. It also improves the compatibility with power amps and loudspeakers.
  • OPA177 makes sure the Op-Amp output is free of DC, avoiding any chances of harming your amplifier and loudspeakers.
  • The KingRex Pre-Amp, like all KingRex audio components, is cased in black steel with a heavy anodized aluminium faceplate and recessed volume knob.

Designed for Sonic Excellence

  • The addition of the OPA177 as a DC servo circuit eliminates output coupling capacitors, resulting in a purer and more accurate representation of the original source.
  • A built-in ‘diamond buffer’ stage is added at the input to increase the dynamic range.
  • When matched with low-power amps, it will improve compatibility and performance with lower-efficiency speakers.

Easy to Upgrade

  • To help you find your favourite sound, KingRex designed the Pre-Amp with socketed Op-Amps. This allows you to change the Op-Amp when new and better units become available.

Specifications

  • Frequency Response - 20Hz ~ 20kHz
  • Noise Level - -104.6dB
  • Dynamic Range - 104.5dB
  • Total Harmonic Distortion - Les than 0.0047%
  • Inputs - 2 line level inputs
  • Outputs - 1 stereo output
  • Power Requirements - 240VAC
  • Power Consumption - Less than 5watts
  • Dimensions - 185mm x 150mm x 50mm

KingRex  PSU

The KingRex T20/U amplifiers sound exceptionally good, but is it possible to make them even better? The standard amplifiers come supplied with a small switching power supply which does the job fine, but KingRex has designed something that replaces the standard power supply. The PSU is a linear regulated power supply outputting just over 12V DC.

Replacing the PSU along can improve the sound of your KingRex T20 or T20U. The highs will have more clarity and produce a smoother tone. The low end is extended and tightens up, an overall more dynamic sound is possible. You’ll be experiencing an even more “tube-like” sound and bigger soundstage.

The PSU uses a 48VA toroidal transformer, transistor regulationg circuit and an array of quality electrolytic capacitors which has a total reserve of 25100uF. This ensures that the PSU can cope with the largest of bass transients.

Specifications

  • Voltage Out - 12.9V DC
  • Power Requirements - 240VAC
  • Total Filtration Capacitors - 5x 2200uF - 3x 4700uF
  • Weight - 180 x 140 x 45 (mm)
  • Dimensions - 1.9kg

KingRex  SLAP

Scroll Up
Scroll Down

After the T20U was released, KingRex continued to work at ways to explore its potential. Two high specification power solutions are now therefore available as alternatives to the standard switching transformer supplied with T20 series amplifiers – a linear power supply unit (KingRex PSU) and this new Sealed Lead-Acid Power unit (affectionately known as SLAP) for truly uncompromised power delivery.

Why switching, linear and battery power?

The power source is particularly crucial to Tripath amplifiers. Switching power adaptors are inexpensive and commonly available, but a poor choice for audiophiles seeking to avoid background noise and distortion created by the high-frequency switching and unwanted harmonics inherent in its design.

Linear power supplies, like the KingRex PSU, are far superior in this regard, but the AC to DC conversion and rectification process passes alternating current through an array of transformers, diodes, voltage regulators, and other potentially compromising components before neat DC is output to the amplifier or DAC.

The SLAP (Sealed Lead-Acid Power battery) unit is able to supply appropriately rated pure direct current without such conversion and therefore extends sonic performance to a level beyond even the PSU in terms of mid-range transparency and treble smoothness.

The KingRex SLAP has interior auto charging/ discharging power managing design. It auto-detects battery voltage and auto-adjusts the charging current to protect the battery from over-charge or over-heat and increaes battery life. For discharging protection, a low voltage detective circuit cuts output automatically when the voltage falls below 10.5V. Charging is a simple one-click operation with smart monitoring. A dual color LED indicator on the front panel shows power and charging status.

Specifications

  • Output Power - 12V DC
  • Battery Type - 12V SLA
  • Power Requirements - 240VAC
  • Dimensions - 185mm x 146mm x 156mm
  • Weight - 4kg

KingRex  PREference

The second-generation pre-amplifier from KingRex is a logical extension of the success story of the award-winning preamp. Built around a high quality Op-Amp and the Diamond Buffer, so highly praised for its musicality, a current booster has been added to the final output of the amplifier stage to enhance drive-ability. A DC Servo circuit has also been implemented to minimise signal loss due to coupling capacitors.

The result is accurate and perfectly balanced signal amplification, free from colouration, yet highly adaptable.

A separate high performance power supply unit further guarantees interference-free performance and a jet-black noise floor. Panasonic FM electrolytic capacitors stand guard along critical paths, dedicated to extremely low ESR. Both the preamp and the PSU (power supply unit) are housed in all-aluminium chassis.

A special feature is the sliding door on top of the preamp opening up to phono stage settings: MC/MM with high/low gain and six preset resistive loads.

Boasting impressive full frequency range with THD as low as 0.0004% and dynamic range better than 108dB, the PREference will doubtless prove to be the pre-amplifier of choice for discerning audiophiles.
